Dear Parents, Students, and Residents, Welcome to the start of a new school year. I hope you will take the time to review this catalog which details our Adult & Continuing Education Program. The Adult Education Program enrolls students for both day and evening classes at 580 Ella Grasso Boulevard and at other sites throughout New Haven. Programs for study include GED, High School Credit Diploma, ESOL, and Citizenship. Many enrichment courses, including computer literacy, computer applications, and a program for Certified Nurse Assistant are also offered. In New Haven there are far too many adults eighteen years and over who do not have a High School Diploma. New Haven also has 6% (5,800 people) of adults 18 years and over who are not fluent in English. Adult Education is a vital partner in addressing these important literacy issues. If we are to succeed as a nation, both economically and socially, we must first become a nation of readers and lifelong learners. That is a message we are promoting in the public schools with our young people, and it is equally important for adults. A high school diploma or studies to improve English proficiency for non-native speakers demonstrate to employers that an applicant has the stamina and dedication to succeed. Many people view elementary education as the first chance that we as individuals have of becoming good learners and productive members of society. However, I believe you cannot put a time or age limit on education. It is a life-long process and our Adult Education Program honors that philosophy. I encourage you to register for fall, winter, spring or summer sessions. While there is an open entry policy, it is preferable to register at the beginning of a semester. I encourage you to enroll in one or more programs of your choice. The fall term registration begins on September 3, 2008. If you would like additional information, please telephone the Adult & Continuing Education Center at 492-0213. Sincerely, Reginald Mayo, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools |
