Eligibility
Adult Education is open to all people 16 years of age and older who are not officially enrolled in a daytime public school program.

Tuition and Fees
There are no fees for Citizenship, Adult Basic Education (ABE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), General Education Diploma (GED), External Diploma Program (EDP). or High School Credit (HSC) classes. There are fees for some enrichment courses. Please call the Center to inquire at 203 492-0213.

Refunds
There will be no refunds after the second class session has met. All course offerings are based on class enrollment and may be combined or relocated at any time. If classes are canceled, full refunds will be given.

Storm Day Policy
On days when storms close the public schools, all Adult Education classes will be canceled. If the weather deteriorates during a school day, notification of evening cancellations will be made on local radio and TV. WELI (960 AM), WYBC (94.3 FM) and WVIT-TV (Channel 30), WTNH (Channel 8) are our official stations.

GED Satellite Sites
There are many sites around New Haven that offer courses in Adult Education. Call the Center at 203 492-0213 for additional information on the site closest to you.

Citizenship Examination

Class Offerings
Not all classes are offered at all sites every semester. Some classes may require a minimum enrollment.


Books and Materials
Students taking HSC, ABE or GED courses have use of books, at no charge, during class hours. In some cases books may be borrowed. For borrowed books, a $30 deposit is required. The deposit will be refunded provided the books are returned no later than the last day of class and are in good condition. For non-mandated courses, books may be purchased at the student's expense.

Counseling services
Counseling services are available for students needing help or direction in various areas. Certified counselors can assist you with personal, educational, vocational or career issues.

Counselors are available at the Center's Boulevard location Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:15 PM and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

Some of the counseling service activities offered are: Voter Registration, Family Services Day, College Day, Health Fair, Financial Aid Workshops, AIDS Awareness Instruction, Career Day and College Admissions Workshops.

Pre-employment Training
The New Haven Adult and Continuing Education Center offers employability training. Areas covered include: how to find a job, keep a job, change jobs, and work effectively with others. Students learn how to complete applications, write a resume, employ interview techniques, access online job services, and business vocabulary. Managing time effectively, and working as part of a team are also covered. Many of these components are taught in all classes. Students may get additional training through the Adult Education Career Services Center.

Additional Services
The Center offers free health screenings TB and Flu Shots are also available.

Literacy Volunteers of America
Literacy Volunteers is a fully integrated national network of local, state, and regional literacy providers that gives adults and their families the opportunity to acquire skills to be effective in their roles as members of their families, communities, and workplaces. Literacy Volunteers provides student-focused tutoring, one-to-one or in small groups, at no charge to the student. The mission is to change lives through literacy. Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven is located at 580 Ella Grass Blvd., at The New Haven Adult Education Center. If you find you're studying hard but need extra help, Literacy Volunteers may be able to help you improve your reading, writing and English speaking skills. Free tutoring is available.

Funding for these programs is derived from the Workforce Investment Act, Title II the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, the Connecticut State Department of Education and the New Haven Board of Education.
