The
General Educational Development Program, or G.E.D., is another way to
obtain a high school diploma. Most businesses, colleges, and technical
schools recognize the G.E.D. as representing the equivalent of a high
school diploma.
*Students can begin G.E.D. classes at age 16 with parental approval,
but must be 17 years of age and officially withdrawn from school for
six months to take the G.E.D. test. New Haven Adult Education offers
G.E.D. classes at convenient locations throughout the city. Day and
evening classes are offered in English or Spanish. While all G.E.D.
classes are free, there may be a cost to take the actual test, see below.
Upon entering the program, students take a CCS placement test to determine
which academic areas they need to improve upon. If the CCS appraisal
score is high enough, they may take the G.E.D. practice test. Class
time is spent studying the five subject areas that are on the G.E.D.
test: Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Reading and the Arts,
and Math. Committed students can progress rapidly through the program.
The Center has three fully equipped computer labs. G.E.D. classes use
computers for computer assisted learning programs, word processing and
the Internet.
Am
I Eligible to take the GED Exam?
Adult Education is open to all people 16 years of age, and older, who
are not officially enrolled in a daytime public school program.
What
Will Be On The GED Exam?
The actual G.E.D. test consists of 5 timed tests which cover the following
areas: Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Reading and the Arts,
and Math (includes use of calculator). The G.E.D. test can be taken
in English or Spanish. A State of Connecticut High School Diploma is
awarded to those scoring 2250 points or more on the test with at least
410 points in each subject area and an average score of 450. The
G.E.D. test is divided into two Saturday sessions which begin at 8:00
AM. To register for the test, you must have already taken a practice
test.
Do
I Need To Take A Practice Test First?
It is strongly suggested that you take a practice exam to see where
you are in terms of your course of study and your chances of success.
Practice G.E.D. tests are by appointment only. Please see a counselor
to make an appointment. When you enroll in the G.E.D. preparatory program,
your teacher will assist you in signing up for the practice test.
Where
Can I Get An Application?
Applications for the G.E.D. test can be made in person at the Center
at 580 Ella Grasso Boulevard. There is no charge for veterans or persons
under 21 years of age. A $13.00 non-refundable fee is charged for applicants
21 years old and over, each time one registers for the test.
Special
Arrangements
Special arrangements for G.E.D. testing can be made for persons with
disabilities. For more information call: Carl Paternostro (860) 807-2110.
